About this coloring page

Mary rides on a small donkey while Joseph walks beside her, leading the animal by its rope. The road stretches ahead toward distant hills, and the sky is starting to turn evening colors. Mary is clearly very pregnant, holding her stomach with one hand and the donkey's saddle with the other. Joseph carries a walking stick and a small bundle of supplies. The whole scene is quiet — no one else is on the road. This page is one of the more reflective ones in the Christmas set, with lots of open sky and road for kids to color in calming tones, focusing on the small figures rather than crowded detail.

Suggested Scripture: Luke 2:4–5 (NIV) — So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

The page is designed as a printable Christian coloring activity that can support a short Bible conversation, a family devotional moment, or a calm classroom activity.

Teaching ideas for parents and teachers

  • Before coloring, ask kids how far they think Bethlehem was from Nazareth. Most won't know — it was about 90 miles, on foot, while pregnant. Let that sink in.
  • For ages 5–7: focus on Joseph's faithfulness. He didn't have to take Mary; he chose to walk with her every step.
  • For Sunday school: this is a good page for talking about quiet obedience. Joseph and Mary weren't doing anything dramatic — they were just doing what they had to do, in faith.
  • For family devotion: read Luke 2:1–5. Ask, "When was the last time we did something hard just because it was the right thing — not because anyone asked or noticed?"

Print and activity tips

  • Use warm sunset colors in the sky — oranges, pinks, and purples — to suggest the long day they've already had.
  • Color the road in slightly different tones along its length to give it depth and distance.
  • Keep Mary's and Joseph's clothes in earth tones; they were ordinary travelers, not royalty.

Discussion questions

  • Mary and Joseph walked for about a week to get to Bethlehem. What's the longest trip you've ever taken?
  • Joseph had to leave his work and his town. What's something you'd be willing to leave behind for someone you love?
  • The Bible doesn't tell us what they talked about on the road. What do you imagine they said?
  • When they got to Bethlehem, there was no room for them. Has that ever happened to your family — being somewhere you weren't really welcome?
  • This was a hard journey, but it was part of God's plan. What hard journeys in your life might be part of His plan too?
